RICHARD CREED
PAINTINGS and DRAWINGS
Artist Statement and Biography
My recent paintings and drawings provide a personal perspective on suburban life in the UK, exploring cityscapes and semi-rural landscapes. Examining the human experience in its many forms through painting and drawing provides a necessary catalyst for my practice. The human figure plays a pivotal role in the work where moments in life are articulated through markmaking and colour creating tough painted surfaces. I am particularly drawn to the contrasts between the natural and built environments that I encounter in London. Recently, my painting practice has been revitalized by a developing narrative about self-discovery, and a desire to engage with the everyday, with observation acting as a vital inspiration for each work.
Traditional mediums like oil and canvas remain significant in 21st-century art, allowing me to tell new stories and document my personal experiences. I believe that the interaction of these elements is crucial for deepening my artistic journey. Each painting has its own distinct life, and through a hands-on approach, I aim to reveal a sense of reality in the creative process, which ultimately influences the final piece. Some artworks come together swiftly, while others may take years to complete. I find that connecting with my surroundings and seeking appropriate motifs is essential for each new creation, whether it’s a specific cityscape or a more personal interior scene, as I work to establish the right balance of composition, colour, space, and texture that drives each painting.
